Started collaborating with Tristan on a Arduino powered clock of sorts.
Here is what that may look like:
Lambda style mechanism:

History of the Lambda linkage and specifically other straight line mechanisms:
“in the late eighteenth century, before the development of the planer and the milling machine, it was extremely difficult to machine straight, flat surfaces. During that era, much thought was given to the problem of attaining a straight-line motion, as this would allow the flat surfaces to be machined.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_line_mechanism is an interesting and cool page.
The lambda linkage saw little applied use…until now?
Opening and closing fins:

two curtains move to indicate the sunrise and sunset times. you can watch as your days shorten and expand on the way to the solstices. A hand moves at a constant speed. you can see what tomorrow more or less brings by gazing at the clock. when i was talking with my bud Derek about it he liked the idea of seeing hope at the days growing. he also wanted a version that was static and showed your personal peak work hours to see how far through your peak work cycle you were through. That’s a whole other thing entirely though.
…..
As I get further away from numeric time really meaning anything at all, the sun incl. general weather has become much more influential in my day to day. “What projects, activities, fun, or responsibilities can I accomplish or ignore this week given the state of the sun, rain y/n, temperature?” This is also coincidental with more importance in my life given to growing plants and food. I am curious how this clock will come to represent those feelings.
